How To Endorse A Check
In order to convert a check somebody has written you into cash you first need to endorse it. The most basic endorsement is to simply sign your name in the space provided on the back of the check. The check can then be converted to cash at your local check cashing location. However, once you endorse your check in this manner, (known as a “blank endorsement”) anyone can cash the check even if it is not made out to them. It is as if once you sign your name, the check is as good as cash and if you lose it, you could lose the funds as well!
A safer option is to wait and endorse the check after you arrive at a check cashing location at the time it is being cashed. This way, if you lose the check, it will be much more difficult for someone to cash it and you can then request a replacement check from the payer.
You may see endorsements that also include the line “for deposit only” and a bank account number. If you are planning to use the services of a check cashing store, you should not use these types of endorsements unless instructed by the staff. These types of endorsements are more suitable when cashing a check at a bank where you already have an account.
More about Endorsing A Check
For a proper endorsement, the name you sign on the back of the check should exactly match the payee name on the front of the check. If your name was mispelled, sign with the incorrect version and then sign again with the correct name.
If a check is made out to more than one person, (two-party check) you typically need both persons present to cash the check at a check cashing location.
